Coccydynia is severe, sharp pain in the coccyx (tailbone), the small triangular bone at the base of the spine. It may result from an injury (for example, due to a fall), prolonged pressure from sitting with a poor posture, or a baby pushing against the mother’s coccyx during childbirth.
However, often there is no obvious cause.
Coccydynia can usually be relieved by over-the-counter pain relievers and usually clears up by itself within a few weeks.
Persistent coccydynia may be treated with an injection into the lower back of a corticosteroid drug, often in combination with an anesthetic.
Usually, no further treatment is needed.
