Administration & Infusion rate
IV infusion
2 – 5 mEq/kg over 4 – 8 hours. Dosage is highly individualized based on patient’s condition, blood pH
and carbon dioxide content.
Slow IV (for emergency cases)
Administer slowly over 5 min (maximum rate in infants: 10 mEq/min)

Remarks
Undiluted hypertonic 8.4% sodium bicarbonate may be given by IV injection during cardiac arrest
Avoid rapid infusion, which may cause tetany in children
In children, do not administer more than 8 mEq/kg/day
Do not give concurrently with calcium or catecholamine. If patient is receiving any of these drugs, flush
IV line thoroughly after each dose
