Hand, foot, and mouth disease is an infectious disease (caused by a virus) that mainly affects young children. Symptoms usually develop 3 to 5 days after infection.
They may include blisters inside the mouth that may develop into painful ulcers, blisters on the hands and feet, a sore throat, and fever. Hand, foot, and mouth disease usually clears up by itself within about 7 to 10 days.
Self-help measures, such as avoiding hot or irritating foods and drinks and taking acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can help to relieve the symptoms.
