ENLARGED PROSTATE
ENLARGED PROSTATE
Prostate enlargement may be due to inflammation (prostatitis, prostate cancer, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Symptoms of BPH may include frequent urination, delay in starting to pass urine, a weak urine flow, dribbling after urinating, and a feeling that the bladder has not emptied completely. Occasionally, urine flow may be completely blocked, causing rapidly increasing pain. This requires urgent treatment to drain accumulated urine.
Mild BPH can often be controlled by lifestyle changes, such as reducing caffeine and alcohol intake, limiting evening beverages, eating a healthy diet, staying active, urinating when you first feel an urge, and urinating regularly every four to six hours during the day.
More severe cases may be treated with medication to shrink the prostate or improve urine flow.
If these treatments are ineffective, surgery may be recommended.
