In this disorder, the adrenal glands do not produce enough corticosteroid hormones, which help the body respond to stress, help regulate metabolism (chemical reactions that keep the body functioning), control blood pressure, and balance the body’s salt and water levels. Addison’s disease is usually caused by an autoimmune reaction in which the immune system attacks the adrenal glands.
Other causes include infections such as tuberculosis (TB) or HIV, certain medications, and suddenly stopping corticosteroid treatment.
Symptoms of Addison’s disease include fatigue, muscle weakness, weight loss, depression, and abnormal skin coloring.
In addition, a sudden illness, injury, or other stress may cause an Addisonian crisis, in which there is a potentially fatal circulatory collapse that requires urgent medical attention.
