Composition
Each capsule contains: Fluoxetine HCI equivalent to fluoxetine 20 mg.
Indications
Flutin is indicated for the treatment ofdepressive illness, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and bulimia nervosa.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to fluoxetine or any of the other ingredients of the capsules.
Fluoxetine should not be used in patients with severe liver or renal diseases as well as in those who enter a manic phase of depression or those with poorly controlled epilepsy.
Precautions
Although withdrawal syndrome is less frequently reported with fluoxetine than with other selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs), abrupt discontinuation of fluoxetine therapy should be avoided.
Patients suffering from mild to moderate renal or hepatic insufficiency should start on a low dose and be carefully monitored.
The dose can be given on alternate days in patients with renal impairment.
Fluoxetine should also be used with caution in patients with a history of mania or cardiac disease.
Caution is also recommended in patients with epilepsy or concurrent electroconvulsive therapy as prolonged seizures had been reported with fluoxetine; treatment should be discontinued if convulsions develop.
Patients should be warned against driving motor vehicles or operating hazardous machinery.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Pregnancy. Although there is no evidence of teratogenicity with use of fluoxetine during pregnancy, it should be used with caution and only when potential benefits out weigh possible risks.
Lactation: It should be avoided during lactation.
Dosage and Administration
Depressive Illness
Usually 20 mg daily with meal, as a single morning dose.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
Initially, 20 mg daily with meal, as a single morning dose. If no response after several weeks, the dose may be increased by 20 mg a day at weekly intervals, but this may increase the potential for side effects.
Maximum daily dose should not exceed 60 mg.
Bulimia Nervosa
Usually 60 mg daily with meal, as a single morning dose.
Flutin is not recommended for children.
