Composition

Each caplet contains: activated attapulgite 750 mg.
Each tablespoonful or each sachet (15 ml) of the suspension contains: activated attapulgite 600 mg.

Properties

Activated attapulgite exerts its antidiarrheal effect by adsorbing large numbers of bacteria and toxins and reducing water loss.

Indications

Rapid symptomatic relief of acute diarrhea.
Extra fluid, appropriate diet and rest arenecessary as adjunct treatment.
In chronic diarrhea, as temporary symptomatic treatment until the etiology is determined.

Side Effects

Mild constipation might be occasionallyexpenenced by patients receiving attapulgite. This is transient and dose related.

Precautions

It is not advisable to use attapulgite if diarrhea is accompanied by high fever (greater than 38°C), or if blood is present in the stools. The risk of dehydration should be borne in mind, especially when adsorbents are given Io children or geriatric palients.
Rehydration therapy becomes essential if signs of dehydration develop such as dry mouth, wrinkled skin, decreased urination and dizziness.

Drug Interactions

Concurrent use of attapulgite with other oral medications containing xanthines, anticholinergics, digitalis, phenothiazines, or lincomycins may impair their absorption.
A time gap of 2-3 hours is recommended between attapulgite and those medicines.
