  • Folliculitis and furunculosis.
  • Paronychia.
  • Other minor bacterial skin infections (secondary skin infections) including infected insect bites, infected superficial bums, infected contact dermatitis, infectious eczematoid dermatits, infected seborrheic dermatitis, infected excoriations, infect ed lacerations, infected skin abscesses
and cysts, infected skin ulcers, infected stasis ulcers, bacterial superinfections offungal or viral infections, sycosis barbae, pyoderma gangrenosum, pustular acne, pustular psoriasis, and infected minor surgical wounds.

Gental has been used successfully in infants over one year old, as well as in children and adults.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to any of the components. Avoid using on leg ulcers, unless used in short courses for defined infections.

Side Effects

Rarely, some patients experienced transient hypersensitivity reactions that generally did not require discontinuation of treatment.

Precautions

Occasionally, the use of topical antibiotics may allow overgrowth of nonsusceptible
organisms. If this occurs, treatment should be discontinued and appropriate therapy
instituted. The same should be followed if irritation, sensitization, or superinfection
develops.
If large areas of skin are being treated, some patients may experience ototoxicity,
which may occur particularly in children, elderly, and those with renal impairment.
Elderly: No geriatrics-specific problems have been documented to date.

Pregnancy:

Problems in human have not been documented. However, it is better to avoid the use of topical gentamicin for pregnant women in large amounts or for prolonged period.

Dosage and Administration

Apply a thin lilm ol cream or ointment to the affected area 3-4 times daily.

NOTES

In impetigo contagiosa, the crusts should be removed before application to allow maximum contact between Gental and the infected area. Concomitant treatment of the skin around the infected stasis ulcers with a topical corticosteroid helps to control inflammation.
