Codependency

What is Codependency?

Codependency is a behavioral condition where a person enables another’s addiction, poor mental health, immaturity, or irresponsibility. It often involves prioritizing others’ needs over one’s own to an unhealthy degree.

Symptoms

  • Difficulty setting boundaries
  • Low self-esteem
  • Need for approval
  • People-pleasing behavior
  • Fear of abandonment

Causes and Risk Factors

  • Dysfunctional family dynamics
  • Childhood emotional neglect
  • Relationships with addicts or abusive individuals
  • Lack of self-identity

Diagnosis

While not a clinical disorder in the DSM-5, codependency patterns are often addressed in therapy, especially in family and addiction counseling.

Treatment and Management

  • Therapy focused on self-worth and boundary-setting
  • 12-step programs (e.g., Co-Dependents Anonymous)
  • Assertiveness training
  • Self-care and independence exercises

Prognosis and Outlook

Recovery is highly possible with consistent therapeutic work and community support.
