๐งฌ Your Kidney Function Results โ Stage 2
Mild reduction in kidney function (eGFR 60โ89 mL/min). Early action can slow or stop progression.
๐ Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR)
Interpretation: Your kidneys are filtering blood at 60โ89% of normal. Many people with stage 2 CKD have no symptoms. The key is to identify and manage underlying causes (diabetes, high blood pressure, proteinuria) to prevent progression.
โ Altered kidney function โ but with lifestyle changes and medication, you can preserve function for many years.
โ ๏ธ Risk Factors Identified
Total modifiable risk factors: 0 (the more you control, the better the outcome).

๐ฌ Urine Glucose & Diabetes Risk
๐ What to do in Stage 2 CKD
- Blood pressure target: < 130/80 mmHg. If you have diabetes or proteinuria, aim for < 125/75.
- Blood sugar control: If diabetic, keep HbA1c < 7% (individualised).
- Dietary adjustments: Reduce salt (โค5g/day), avoid processed meats, eat vegetables and whole grains. Consider consulting a renal dietitian.
- Medications: ACE inhibitors or ARBs are often used to protect kidneys, especially if proteinuria is present.
- Avoid nephrotoxins: NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen), highโdose proton pump inhibitors, certain antibiotics โ always consult your doctor.
- Monitor regularly: Repeat eGFR and urine protein every 6โ12 months, or more often if risk factors worsen.
โ ๏ธ When eGFR may be unreliable
The estimated GFR can be misleading in the following situations:
- Acute changes in kidney function
- Recent consumption of cooked meat
- Exceptional dietary intake (e.g., creatine supplements)
- Extremes of body size (very muscular or very low muscle mass)
- Diseases of skeletal muscle
- Children under 18 years
- Severe liver disease
- Drugs interfering with creatinine excretion (e.g., cimetidine, trimethoprim)
- Pregnancy
Note: Most people with stage 2 CKD have no symptoms. It is often discovered during routine testing for diabetes or high blood pressure โ the two leading causes of kidney disease.
