The insertion of an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD, commonly known as a coil) may also sometimes lead to PID.<br \/>Sometimes there may be no symptoms. If symptoms do occur, they may include lower abdominal pain; fever; an abnormal vaginal discharge; heavy, painful, or prolonged periods; and pain during sex. <br \/>PID that develops suddenly may cause severe pain, nausea, and vomiting, and it requires urgent medical treatment. PID may cause infertility or increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy . <br \/>Treatment is usually with antibiotics, and pain relievers to relieve symptoms. <br \/>Sex should be avoided until recovery is complete.
