Keloids are the result of overproduction of the skin protein collagen during the healing process.<br \/>  They are more common in dark-skinned people, and susceptibility to them may run in families. They usually develop after skin damage\u2014even minor damage from, say, a small cut may cause a keloid\u2014but they can also sometimes occur without any apparent cause. <br \/> Keloids are harmless and do not require treatment. <br \/> Possible treatments include corticosteroids, silicone preparations, pressure dressings, freezing, or certain chemotherapy or wart medications.
