It is caused by an abnormal gene, and if a person inherits the gene from either parent, he or she will develop the disorder.  <br \/> In most cases, symptoms do not appear until age 35 to 50.  <br \/> The condition usually progresses for about 10 to 25 years until the person eventually dies.  <br \/> There is no cure for the condition, but medication may relieve some of the symptoms.
