It usually lasts for only a few hours (acute urticaria) but may persist for months (chronic urticaria). Urticaria is usually due to an allergic reaction; sometimes it may be triggered by an infection, stress, or exposure to heat or cold. <br \/> Acute urticaria usually clears up without treatment. <br \/> Chronic urticaria may be treated with antihistamines to relieve itching. In severe cases, corticosteroid tablets may be prescribed.
