They can occur singly or multiply,<br \/>\nand one or both kidneys may be affected.<br \/>\nThey are very common, especially in<br \/>\npeople over about 50, but their cause is unknown. The cysts are not cancerous and<br \/>\ndo not usually cause symptoms.
