It is most commonly<br \/>\ncaused by a head injury that ruptures a<br \/>\nblood vessel. Typically, symptoms develop<br \/>\nwithin hours of the injury. They may include<br \/>\nheadache, vomiting, drowsiness, paralysis<br \/>\naffecting one side of the body, and seizures<br \/>\n(\u201cfits\u201d). Anyone with these symptoms<br \/>\nshould seek urgent medical advice. A<br \/>\nhematoma may occur after a person<br \/>\nbriefly loses consciousness at the time of<br \/>\nan injury and then loses consciousness<br \/>\nagain hours later. In a few cases, bleeding<br \/>\noccurs relatively slowly and symptoms<br \/>\nmay not develop for days.<br \/>\nTreatment is with surgery. With prompt<br \/>\ntreatment, many people make a good<br \/>\nrecovery, although there may be long-term<br \/>\nresidual problems, such as weakness.
