There are two main types: reflux and corrosive. <br \/>  Reflux esophagitis is due to leaking of stomach acid into the esophagus (gastroesophageal reflux disease); the acid inflames the esophageal lining, causing heartburn.  <br \/> Treatment may include lifestyle changes, such as avoiding heavy meals, medication to reduce stomach acidity, or sometimes surgery. <br \/>  Corrosive esophagitis is due to swallowing caustic chemicals.
