A dislocation is often accompanied by tearing of the joint ligaments and damage to the membrane encasing the joint. There may also be damage to nearby nerves, tendons, and blood vessels.  <br \/> Symptoms typically include severe pain in the affected area, deformity of the joint, and swelling and bruising around the joint.  <br \/> Treatment usually involves manipulating the joint back into place, followed by immobilization in a splint or cast.
