Simple kidney cysts are fluid-filled sacs
that develop in the outer layer of the
kidney. They can occur singly or multiply,
and one or both kidneys may be affected.
They are very common, especially in
people over about 50, but their cause is unknown. The cysts are not cancerous and
do not usually cause symptoms. Rarely,
there may be blood in the urine or a cyst
may become large enough to press on
surrounding tissues, causing back pain.
Treatment is not usually necessary,
although a cyst that is causing pain may
be drained or removed surgically.
