In geographic tongue, there are irregular, raw, red patches with white borders on the tongue. The cause is unknown. This condition usually causes no symptoms, although occasionally there may be discomfort when eating spicy or acidic foods.
The condition is harmless and usually clears up on its own.
A doctor or dentist should be consulted if any unusual patch in the mouth persists for more than a few weeks, to exclude the possibility of a more serious condition
