Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix, leading to severe abdominal pain.
Blockage and infection in the appendix can cause it to fill with pus and swell.
As the swelling worsens, the appendix starts to die. Eventually, it bursts and infected material leaks out, which may then lead to peritonitis.
The first symptom of appendicitis is usually vague discomfort around the navel.
Within hours, this develops into severe pain in the lower right side of the abdomen.
There may also be nausea, vomiting, fever, and diarrhea. Treatment is by prompt surgical removal of the appendix
