Scabies is a skin infestation caused by a mite that burrows into the skin. It is contagious and can be passed on by close physical contact. Symptoms include intense itching; a widespread rash of raised, pinkish-red spots; and short lines on the skin caused by the mite’s burrows.
The itching may persist for up to 3 weeks after the rash has disappeared.
Treatment is with an antiparasitic lotion or cream. A topical corticosteroid may be prescribed to relieve itching. To prevent reinfection, all family members should be treated. Nightwear and bed and bath linens should be washed at a high temperature.
